Review

We all know the importance of a good night's sleep to maintain a healthy body and mind. Sleep is our body's way of healing, taking care of our aches and pains, worries and woes so that for those sweet few hours, we can relax. Scientific studies have proven that a healthy sleep pattern aids in better concentration and productivity; decreases your risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes; promotes better mental health through improved sleep quality and boosts your immune system function.

But we don't all have the best quality of sleep, taking a long time to reach the land of nod, waking frequently or before the birds start chirping to the dawn. Sleep is so essential to our wellbeing that WellBeMed conducted research at Lund University’s Biomedical Centre, Sweden, to produce a range of sleep products that they hope will contribute to relieving lifestyle-related health problems.

All 4 products contain lemon balm extract, a citrusy herb belonging to the mint family, that has been known for its beneficial health properties for over 2000 years. Modern studies have also found that lemon balm has a calming and sedative impact when included within the diet.

So, with these bold claims, and WellBeMed’s drive for sustainability, I wanted to try their sleep products out for myself. Here's how I got on ...

WellBeSleep Juice Shot – Apple, Turmeric and Elderflower

As the first juice shot that I tried, it really packed a punch! The blend is super concentrated, which took me by surprise, but the flavour is almost akin to spiced green tea. The blend works well together in that only the deep yellow colour gives away the turmeric, though I could detect a slight aftertaste. Personally, this was my least favourite as I’m not a fan of turmeric in drinks, but if you like the health benefits of turmeric, then it could be a way to add it into your diet.

WellBeSleep Juice Shot – Apple, Beetroot and Ginger

Again, the flavours were extremely potent, with the beetroot and ginger being a little more obvious to the palate. Alike all of the juice shots, there is a slight spiced flavour - whether this comes from the lemon balm (as I haven’t tried it before), I‘m unsure, but it is a distinctive flavour that could work for you if you enjoy a healthy juice shot, irrespective of the suggested sleep benefits.

WellBeSleep Juice Shot – Apple and Blueberry

This was definitely my favourite juice shot, with a much sweeter blend to accompany the spiced flavour. I didn’t particularly notice whether the shots helped me to sleep better (though I nod off pretty quickly), but if you’re suffering, it might be worth giving them a go and seeing if the lemon balm works for you. Everyone is different and it could be just the natural remedy you need to help you drift off into a good night’s sleep - just drink (or eat) all of the products 30 minutes before bed.

WellBeSleep Chocolate Bar

I unwrapped with high expectations, greeted by a dark chocolate aroma, but the texture was unexpectedly soft. Maybe this was due to me expecting an actual chocolate bar, but the texture is more like a cake bar, filled with oats. Research has found that chocolate can be beneficial to our health (win!), boosting our mood through increasing serotonin and dopamine levels, whilst dark chocolate has the added benefit of being packed with antioxidants that improve blood flow, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Who knew?!

Again, the same spiced flavour accompanied the bar, so if you’re looking for a healthy snack before bed, this could be the product for you, as it was very filling. Personally, I think the price is quite expensive for how small the bar is, but if you are having trouble sleeping, it could be worth giving the bar a go.
