Review
Fab-u-lous!! I still have the entire soundtrack in my head and was absolutely buzzing after the ‘cell-block tango’ as it was performed so brilliantly by the entire female cast depicting the 6 cellmates all begging to be the centre of attention.
What can I say!? A sexy and sassy musical about murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery, and treachery set amongst the ‘old razzle dazzle’ of the 1920s. Faye Brookes stars as Roxy Hart and at first, the way that she portrayed her innocent character initially was questionable, however the more the performance went on, her inner sass appeared, and she really made the character her own.
Much like the film, Brenda Edwards channelled her inner sassy and sensual Queen Latifah to depict the character of Matron ‘Mama’ Morton and harmonised perfectly with Velma Kelly (Djalenga Scott) for the performance of ‘Class’. The production, the music, singing, and dancing was high quality and much like the movie. S
et on one singular stage with a live orchestra, the characters had the right mix of dark humour, sexy nature, and brought sympathy for the characters’ storylines.
Despite one small technical glitch with a microphone which temporarily delayed the showing, the actors carried on spectacularly until the end of the scene and came back with even more drama and pizzazz throughout. Even the conductor got included as part of the show and he brought some great humour too.
A truly stand out performance by Kevin Clifton as Billy Flynn. The puppet scene was iconic, bringing the charm of the film’s Richard Gere with his own twist on the character.
The show is running until the 19th of October so grab your ticket soon!
