REVIEW 

I was not sure what to expect from Girl in the North Country when I stepped into the Hippodrome, heading to my seat. I am familiar with the music written by Bob Dylan, but not sure how it would fit the story I had summarily read about.

Well, I must say that I was swept away by the amazing adaptation of the songs and the talented singing! 

We are introduced to the story by Dr Walker, very close to the Laine family - the main characters of the show. They are going through a rough time: Nick is dealing with the guesthouse failure and economic uncertainty, Liz suffers from dementia, Marianne is 5 months pregnant without support from the child’s dad, Gene suffers from alcoholism and is without a job.

Nick tries to solve all the issues in his family, sometimes losing his cool on scene, and surrounded by his guests, among whom his love interest, Mrs Neilsen. Other characters are part of this animated musical, showcasing what it means to support one another at times of great distress.

It is not all gloomy though - there are moments of irony and laughter, and of course beautiful solo and choral singing. The songs are inserted in specific moments of the show, sharing the atmosphere of the scene or the topic, and the cast is very talented - sometimes leaving you in awe of the beautiful sounds!

It is a show about human nature and its flaws, about these flaws making us vulnerable and sometimes mean, but defining us in the good and the bad.

Unmissable if you love Bob Dylan’s music and a country musical!
