Writer Of The Month - An Interview With Katie Coughlin
City Girl Magazine is home to over 200 volunteer writers and editors who give their time to help us create content for this amazing platform. We want to celebrate the exemplary writers who have shown dedication to the magazine, as well as helping to build resources and masterclasses for our Volunteers Hub. The magazine truly wouldn’t be what it is without their hard work and creativity.
Our Writer of the Month for November is Katie Coughlin, let’s get to know her a little better…
Age: 28
Occupation: Freelance Journalist/Writer
City: Austin, Texas
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU JOIN CITY GIRL MAGAZINE AS A VOLUNTEER?
I joined City Girl Network this autumn as a volunteer writer because not only did I want a platform that I could consistently express what I feel are important opinions, but also so I could write with other women who have an interest in culture. I like female-centered periodicals that defy the stereotype of what society feels a womens’ magazine is supposed to be.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT VOLUNTEERING FOR CITY GIRL AS A CONTENT CREATOR?
What I love most about volunteering is that I, along with other women, get to reach people and share important ideas that others may not be aware of or entirely understand. As a content creator and as a journalist, I have the power to tell the world about what is going on and what I think is important to know about. My hope is that my articles benefit others.
TELL US MORE ABOUT WHAT YOU ENJOY WRITING ABOUT...
I mostly enjoy writing about cultural critique. Whether it’s something about a show or a book that strikes me, or something going on in current events, I love to be able to express whatever my current fascination is through writing.
WHAT TOPICS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO WORKING ON IN THE FUTURE?
I look forward to writing about traditions in different cultures; maybe even something for the holidays. I would also love to do more interviews at some point. Writing environmental pieces is also a goal of mine.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTICLE IN THE MAGAZINE?
My favorite article in City Girl Network is Georgie Hare’s “Countryside Code: Looking After Nature”. I like Georgie’s relatable style of writing especially on a topic like the environment. It’s my opinion that the environment should be one of the top concerns for people all over the world. If we don’t have a planet, we’ll forfeit all ability to solve any other issue in the world.
IF YOU HAD TO PICK YOUR FAVOURITE ARTICLE, WHICH YOU HAVE PUBLISHED WITH CITY GIRL NETWORK MAGAZINE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My interview with Dr. Melina Abdullah is by far my favorite. For one, I think that Black Lives Matter is an extremely important topic and oftentimes misunderstood. And secondly, Dr. Abdullah is very important in the United States so I was excited (and a little nervous) to interview her.
