Food Review: The Scottish Bee Company

We were lucky to be sent some very exciting products from The Scottish Bee Company and over the last week they have been truly put to the test. You won’t beelieve some of the options they have! (That will be the only bee-related pun in this review, I promise).

As the name suggests, this company is based in Scotland, and it focuses on providing bees to Scottish beekeepers in an attempt to stop the decline in bee population. All The Scottish Bee Company honey is locally sourced, the packaging is eco-friendly, and all ingredients are easily labelled so you know what’s in your food!

Here’s the products we gave a go:

Pure Honeys Scottish Heather Honey

This ‘superfood honey’ has ten times more manganese than any other honey in the world, so if you want to give your health that extra boost, this is the pot for you.

Taste: ★★

This is a set honey with a rich flavour. Despite its pleasant texture, it was not sweet enough for what I look for in honey. However, if you don’t have a massive sweet tooth, I would recommend checking this one out! I tried it on toast for a quick breakfast before rushing to work.

Price: £9.00 for 227g or £12.00 for 340g

Scottish Blossom Honey

This honey is made ‘from the nectar of a mix of flowers including clover, lime, and oil seed rape’.

Taste: ★★★★

Also a set honey (although the website seems to offer a runny version as well), the Scottish Blossom is definitely the sweetest honey out of the three and the one I will be coming back for the most.

Don’t get me wrong, this is not sickly-sweet like some other honeys I have tried in the past – it hits the right spot. I would recommend trying it with porridge or adding some to your toast. I will definitely look for some cake recipes where I can incorporate this delightful honey!

Price: £7.00 for 227g or £10.00 for 340g

Signature Blend Honey

This blend ‘combines the nutritional benefits of heather honey with the unique sweetness of blossom.’

Taste: ★★★★

This runny honey had a very satisfying texture, and it is definitely the inbetweener on the sweetness scale. I tried it with some camomile tea on a cold night when I was feeling run down and it cheered me right up.

I have also used it to put together a quick homemade teriyaki sauce and it gave my dinner that extra spark. The runny consistency is my go-to in honey so I will reach out for this product again and again.

Price: £8.50 for 227g or £11.50 for 340g

Hot Honey Drizzles

Kimchi Hot Honey Drizzle

Taste: ★★★★★

This hot honey drizzle was ‘developed with a mission to reduce food waste’ by using the natural by-product of kimchi brine and combining it with Scottish Blossom honey.

Ingredients: Scottish Honey (80%), Kimchi liquor (20%) (Spring onion, Red pepper powder, Red Miso Paste (Soybean, rice, yeast, ethyl alcohol, koji, salt), Ginger, Garlic, Salt, Sugar), will contain traces of the other kimchi ingredients (Chinese cabbage, Carrots).

This mildly spicy drizzle was the perfect blend of sweet and sour due to the specific honey that was used. I tried it with tofu (yes, I eat a lot of tofu!) and also with some duck spring rolls and the result was delicious. I certainly see myself reaching out for this again and again – I can’t wait to get some chicken wings and indulge. I found that the traditional taste of pure honey really shined through in this drizzle.

Price: £7.95 for 200g

Scotch Bonnet Hot Honey Drizzle

Taste: ★★★★

This drizzle is a ‘fusion of sweet and heat’ with a ‘fiery kick’.

Ingredients: Scottish Honey (92%), Scotch Bonnet Peppers (4.3%), Organic Cider Vinegar.

I tasted this drizzle on its own first and I immediately felt the heat. This is absolutely one for the spice lovers amongst us, but especially if you still want that sweetness to come through in your meals.

I did try it with some classic chicken wings, which was delicious, but the real surprise was the way it spruced up a cheap supermarket peperoni pizza and turned a plain meal into a delicious experience. A little goes a long way with this one!

Price: £7.95 for 200g

Nuisance drinks

These ‘sparkling botanicals’ are a soft drink that is gluten free, vegan friendly, and has natural flavouring only. They come in five different flavours – Rhubarb and Ginger, Mint, Cucumber and Chilli, Bramble and Rosemary, Nettle and Elderflower and Pink Grapefruit and Basil.

Although that is not the main selling point, these cans are very beautiful and certainly offer an alcohol-free alternative to those of us who still want to drink something that tastes (and looks!) exciting. The flavours are all quite floral, however even though I am not usually a big fan of those, I still quite enjoyed trying these out.

I would particularly recommend the Rhubarb and Ginger as it is a lovely, sweet drink that still feels light (you could even add some gin to it if you are not sober) and the Pink Grapefruit and Basil, which was also sweet and refreshing.

The Scottish Bee Company has an array of goodies that you should try. They offer gift sets which would be a perfect present for the foodies in your life – I would recommend the Foodie Duo Gift, which includes the Kimchi Hot Honey and the Scotch Bonnet Hot Honey Drizzles. If you are looking to treat yourself but don’t know where to start, let me suggest the Raspberry and Honey Dressing – the unique flavour profile of the product is worth it!

A quick note should be made to say that The Scottish Bee Company has a sister charity called repollinate and each product bought funds its projects, which aim to promote pollination and the growth of the bee population.
